In general the more gears that a bicycle has the better. Some have 16 gears, 20 gears, 27 gears etc. so there is quite a difference between different bicycles. Essentially, if one bicycle has more gears than another that means that the bicycle that has more gears should be able to handle the ground better. However, you don’t really have to gears if you won’t be riding your bicycle in tough terrains.

Size is easily one of the most important things to get right when you’re buying a second hand bicycle. Bikes come in all different sized frames, some of which will suit some people while not suiting others. If you’re unsure what type of bike frame is right for you, it might not be a bad idea to go to a local bike shop and test a few out, then come back to our site and look for someone that is selling a second hand bicycle that’s perfect for you!

If you’re planning on riding your bicycle for off-road use and so on then you really need to buy a second hand bicycle that has a good suspension system. In most cases, a mountain bike will be a good option if this is what you’re looking for. Some mountain bikes only have front suspension though (known as hardtails) while the better ones have both front and rear suspension (know as dual suspension).
